How Sharks Detect Prey from Miles Away

Sharks are some of the ocean’s most formidable predators, and their ability to detect prey from miles away is nothing short of extraordinary. What makes these marine hunters so effective isn't brute strength alone—it's the incredible suite of biological tools they've evolved to seek out even the faintest signs of life across vast distances.

One of their most well-known abilities is their acute sense of smell. Some shark species can detect a single drop of blood in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. In open ocean environments, where visual cues can be limited, these senses work in harmony to help sharks hone in on targets over great distances, often before the prey is aware of the danger.
