How Sharks Detect Prey from Miles Away

Sharks are often portrayed as mindless predators, but their hunting skills are anything but brute force. Beneath their streamlined bodies lies a suite of highly tuned senses that allow them to locate prey with astonishing accuracy—even from miles away. Far beyond what human senses can perceive, sharks are equipped with biological tools designed for silent, distant detection in the vast expanse of the ocean.

The process begins with smell. A shark's sense of smell is so acute that it can detect a single drop of blood diluted in millions of gallons of seawater. Even prey hiding under sand or lying motionless on the seafloor can be detected this way, making it nearly impossible to hide from a hunting shark.
